Spring your Garden into Life

Caring for the Lawn

With the days starting  to feel less cold and light returning to the garden, your lawn will look less sad than it has been through the winter. This is a great time for you to give it a breath of new life. You can start by raking out old grass clippings and moss (which can be added to your compost store) and tidy up any paths or play areas on your lawn. 

These are areas where your lawn soil may have become compacted so you may wish to improving drainage and aeration by adding deep holes with a garden fork every 10 cm or so. Or else look at scarification or aeration. These are some of the jobs I do for regular clients at about this time of year.

Compost is King!

Good quality organic matter! It always sounds so technical on the radio or in your Garden Magazine of choice but to the lay man, they all mean compost! Good old rotted-down garden and vegetable "waste"!

If you haven't started composting yet, you've no idea what you're missing out on! Or what your garden is missing more to the point. Good quality home-made compost is free and packed full of all the nutrients your garden, plants, vegetables and flowers need to grow big and strong!

Plan the Summer Garden

This is the part we all enjoy! That's planning out the garden for summer and deciding where you'll be serving scones and jam and next to which overflowing flowers! Whether you're ordering seeds online during the adverts or shopping for them in store, give the overall plan of the garden some thought.

Remember... Early on in the Spring is the perfect time to plant your garden's perennials, trees, and shrubs.

Kit Check for the Garden

Look after your tools and they'll look after you and your garden! But there's no better way to get into your garden-zone than ensuring your tools are prepared for the job ahead of creating your garden space. Ensuring that tools are primed and ready to go can really help with your mindset and it's a good time to repair or replace things you need for the jobs you've planned.

Are your tools as sharp as you? Believe it of not, blunt tools for cutting plants can often do more harm than good when pruning and trimming. You want a neat, clean cut with your garden plants. So it's worth investing the time into checking your tools, oiling and sharpening, or else replacing them if you need to.
